A 529 Site is Overloaded error is an HTTP status code used by Cloudflare (and services like Qualys) to indicate that the service is experiencing extreme traffic saturation and is temporarily unable to serve the request.
Similar to a 503 Service Unavailable error, a 529 error signifies that the system is actively shedding load to protect core infrastructure from collapsing.
Determining why
The website or platform has experienced a massive unexpected traffic surge or denial-of-service attack that exceeded its maximum processing thresholds.
Steps you could possibly take:
- Wait a minute and refresh - Once the traffic wave subsides or automated autoscaling instances spin up, requests will begin succeeding.
- If you are the website owner:
- Review your server’s autoscaling policies and compute limits.
- Enable Cloudflare’s “Under Attack Mode” to filter malicious bot traffic.
