508 Error

A 508 Loop Detected error is a webserver’s code for:

“The server halted your request because it detected an infinite redirect or dependency loop.”

A 508 Loop Detected error is an HTTP status code indicating that the server terminated an operation because it encountered an infinite loop while processing a request with “Depth: infinity”.

(Note: On shared cPanel web hosting, Error 508 is also commonly displayed when a site exceeds its CloudLinux resource limits for concurrent processes or CPU.)

Determining why

  • In WebDAV, a request attempted to copy or move a directory structure that contained circular symbolic links or recursive bindings.
  • On cPanel / CloudLinux hosts, your site exceeded its concurrent process limit (maxEntryProcesses) due to high traffic spikes or unoptimized code.

Steps you could possibly take:

  • Wait a few minutes - On shared hosting, resource spikes often subside within 5 to 10 minutes once concurrent PHP processes finish.
  • If you are the website owner:
    • Check your hosting control panel’s Resource Usage metrics.
    • In WebDAV systems, audit folder structures to eliminate recursive directory shortcuts or symlinks.
    • Optimize database queries and caching to reduce simultaneous long-running PHP threads.
