430 Error

A 430 Request Header Fields Too Large error is a Shopify-specific code for:

“Your browser's request headers or cookies are too large for Shopify's servers to handle.”

A 430 Request Header Fields Too Large error is an unofficial status code used by Shopify to indicate that the client’s HTTP request headers—most frequently accumulated cookies—exceed the server’s allowable size threshold.

While standard HTTP uses 431 for this condition, Shopify historically utilized 430 to distinguish store-level header overflows.

Determining why

As you browse an e-commerce website over months or years, tracking cookies, shopping cart tokens, analytics tags, and session identifiers accumulate in your browser for that domain. Eventually, the combined size of the Cookie header exceeds the server’s limit.

Steps you could possibly take:

  • Clear cookies for the specific store - Open your browser settings, search for the store’s domain name under Cookies & Site Data, and delete cookies for that site.
  • Open an Incognito / Private window - Test loading the store in private browsing mode where no stored cookies exist.
  • If you are a Shopify store owner:
    • Audit your installed Shopify apps. Tracking and customization apps that store excessive client-side cookie payloads can cause frequent 430 errors for repeat visitors.
