410 Error

A 410 Gone error is a webserver’s code for:

“That used to be here, but it was intentionally deleted and it's never coming back.”

A 410 Gone error indicates that access to the target resource is no longer available at the origin server and that this condition is likely to be permanent.

While a 404 Not Found error means the server simply doesn’t know where the file is (and it might come back later), a 410 Gone error is intentional: the website administrator specifically configured the server to state that the resource was permanently retired and will not return.

Determining why

Website administrators intentionally return 410 Gone when:

  • A promotional campaign, limited-time contest, or event page has concluded.
  • Content was permanently deleted for legal, privacy, or policy reasons.
  • The site owner wants search engines like Google to immediately drop the URL from search result indexes rather than waiting weeks for repeated 404 checks.

Steps you can take

  • Do not retry the request - Because the removal is permanent, reloading the page will not bring the content back.
  • Search the main website - Navigate to the website’s homepage or search bar to see if a newer version or replacement article exists.
  • Remove dead links - If you run a website that links to this URL, remove the link or update it to point to a current resource.
  • Check the Internet Archive - If you need to view historic information, search for the URL on The Wayback Machine.
