A 409 Conflict error indicates that the request could not be processed because of a conflict with the current state of the target resource on the server.
This typically happens during PUT, POST, or DELETE operations where the requested change would create an inconsistent or contradictory state—such as two people trying to edit the same file simultaneously, uploading an older version over a newer one, or registering a username that was taken a fraction of a second earlier.
Determining why
The server understood what you wanted to do, but accepting your change would overwrite or violate an existing rule or version constraint on the server.
Steps you can take
- Refresh the page and re-apply changes - Reload the webpage to fetch the latest state of the resource, merge your changes, and submit again.
- Check for duplicate submissions - Verify whether your earlier submission already succeeded before trying to submit a duplicate form.
- Resolve version discrepancies - If you are using an API, check whether your request includes an outdated
ETagor version number, and fetch the current version before resubmitting. - If you are the website owner - Ensure that error responses for 409 conflicts include descriptive response bodies explaining the exact nature of the conflict and how the user or client can resolve it.
