A 407 Proxy Authentication Required error is similar to a 401 Unauthorized error, but with one key difference: the authentication must take place with an intermediary proxy server between your computer and the destination website.
This error is common on corporate networks, school campuses, secure intranets, and when using commercial VPNs or proxy services that require credentials to route your traffic.
Determining why
If you encounter a 407 error, your device’s web request reached a proxy server that requires authentication credentials before it will forward your traffic to the wider internet.
Steps you can take
- Enter your proxy credentials - If a prompt appears requesting a username and password, enter your network or proxy credentials.
- Verify proxy settings in your browser or OS - Check your computer’s network settings (in Windows Settings under Network & Internet > Proxy or macOS System Settings under Network > Proxies) to ensure proxy addresses and credentials are correct.
- Disconnect from VPN or corporate proxy - If you are browsing on a personal computer, try disabling third-party proxy extensions or VPN software to see if the error clears.
- Contact your network administrator - If you are on an office or university network, ask your IT department to verify your account permissions on the proxy gateway.
